Risky email warnings

Bottle Mail checks every email for the signs of phishing and tells you in plain words when something looks wrong.

Windows, web and phone
The note says what is wrong, not just that something is.

What the colours mean

  • Red ring and “Risky”: the email shows a strong sign of phishing, for example an address that imitates a well-known company, a sender check that failed, or a link that shows one website but goes to another.
  • Amber ring and “Careful”: something deserves a second look, for example a first-time sender asking for a password or a payment, or replies that would go to a different address.
  • Green ring: someone you know, because you wrote to them, replied to them or have them in your contacts.
  • No ring: a new sender with nothing unusual about the email.

The ring sits around the sender’s picture in the message list, and the tag next to the message. Open the message to see the note with every reason.

Images in risky mail

Pictures from the internet stay blocked in a risky email, even if you chose to always load them. You can still load them for that one message if you are sure.

When a warning is wrong

Select This is safe in the note. The sender joins your trusted senders: their mail is no longer flagged and their pictures load.

Turn the warnings off

Open Settings, go to Reading and turn off Warn about risky email. This works the same in the Windows app, the web app and on your phone.

Questions

Is my mail sent anywhere to be checked?

No. The check follows fixed rules and runs where your mail is kept: in the Windows app on your PC, and for the web app and your phone on the Bottle Mail service that syncs your mail. No AI and no outside service reads your mail for it.

Does Bottle Mail move or delete risky mail?

No. It only warns you. To get rid of a sender for good, block them.
