Picture size

Make a picture in your message bigger or smaller, line it up, or take it out. People see it at the size you chose.

Windows, web and phone
Drag a corner, or pick a size in the bar under the picture.

Resize a picture

  1. In the message you are writing, click the picture. It gets an outline with a handle on each corner, and a small bar appears under it.
  2. Drag any corner. The picture keeps its shape, and its size shows while you drag, for example “320 × 180”.
  3. Let go. Changed your mind? Press Ctrl+Z to undo the whole resize in one step.

The bar under the picture

  • Small, Medium and Large make the picture 200, 400 or 600 pixels wide. Large is the width of a typical email.
  • Original shows the picture at its own size.
  • Align left, Align center and Align right line up the line the picture is on.
  • The bar also shows the picture’s current width, for example “400 px”.
  • Remove (the bin) takes the picture out of the message.

With the keyboard

Select the picture first, then:

  • Alt+→ makes it 10% bigger, and Alt+← makes it 10% smaller.
  • Alt+F10 moves into the bar. Use ← and → to move between its buttons, and Esc to go back to your text.

New pictures fit the message

A picture you paste, drop or insert starts no wider than 600 pixels, so it never spills past the edge of the message. Very large photos are also made smaller (up to 1600 pixels) when you add them, so the email stays small.

What people see

The size you choose is kept in your drafts, and it is what people see in Gmail, Outlook (Windows and web) and Apple Mail. On a phone, the picture shrinks to fit the screen.

In the web app

The same handles and bar work in the web app. Paste or drop a picture into the message, or use the Insert picture button.

Questions

Does resizing make the file smaller?

No. Resizing changes how big the picture shows. The picture file itself is only made smaller when you add it: photos over 1 MB become at most 1600 pixels. If an email is still too big to send, the Windows app offers Make pictures smaller.

Why does my picture look blurry at Large?

The picture is smaller than 600 pixels, so Large stretches it past its own size. Choose Original to show it sharp.

Can I add or resize pictures on my phone?

Yes. In the message you are writing, tap Add picture and choose pictures from your photos. They appear under your text. Tap one, then tap Small, Medium, Large or Original, or Remove. Dragging to resize and alignment are in the Windows and web apps.

Pictures added on the phone are not kept if you close the message and open the draft again.
