New and read mail

New mail stands out in the list, so you can see at a glance what you have not read yet.

Windows and web
Two new messages, and one you have read.

How it works

A message you have not read yet has four marks, so it is easy to spot even at a glance:

  • a light tint behind the row,
  • a coloured bar along its left edge,
  • a small dot, and
  • the sender, subject and date in bold.

Once you have read it, all four go away and the row shows regular text in a softer colour. The message you have open gets a stronger highlight and an outline, and keeps its bar while it is still unread.

The bar and the dot always mean “unread”. If you use more than one account, each message shows its account as a small labelled tag instead, never as a bar or a dot.

Opening a message marks it as read.

Mark a message as unread or read

In the Windows app:

  1. Open the message and select Mark unread in the toolbar above it, or press U. Press U again to mark it as read.
  2. Or right-click the message in the list and choose Unread (or Read).
  3. To change many messages at once, select them and choose Read or Unread in the bar above the list. See Select many messages.

Questions

Do my other mail apps see the change?

Yes. Read and unread are saved on your mail server too, so your phone and other mail apps show the same state.

Can I select only the unread messages?

Yes. In the Windows app, select the arrow next to the box at the top of the list and choose Unread.

Does the web app look the same?

Yes. The web app at mail.brandcode10.com uses the same marks for new and read mail. To mark the open message as unread there, select Mark unread above it.
